In a time when militaristic and authoritarian actions are being taken against everyday people simply for existing, I didn’t think things could get much worse. However, it seems there is always something that can surprise me. Police officers in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, responded to a report of a false brush fire, and firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Half an hour later, they were ambushed by an unknown assailant. Yes, you read that correctly: a single individual is attempting to harm the most useful and least aggressive first responders in the history of the United States.
The video above shows the moment it was reported that a man armed with high-powered weapons ambushed firefighters responding to a call about a brush fire. The shooter, who is still on the loose in the Coeur d’Alene area, allegedly started the fire and called for public servants to come and resolve the issue. However, shortly after the firefighters arrived, gunfire erupted, striking several of them. As of now, two firefighters have died, and one remains in critical condition and is undergoing surgery.

According to county sheriff Robert Norris, the shooter was still actively shooting at them into the early hours of Monday, June 30, and the weapon had been identified as either a single or multiple sniper rifles. Shortly after this revelation had been made, officers honed in on a cellphone signal within the brush fire and were able to locate a body with a firearm nearby. Considering the nature of the incident, the body has not been officially identified as the shooter, though evidence seems to point in that direction. Concerning the fire, it is still actively being put out.
Idaho has recently attracted attention for its controversial viewpoints. In Boise, citizens organized a Straight Pride parade in response to the Pride Parade held every June. Our thoughts are with the firefighters who were injured while trying to save lives in what could have been a much larger situation.
