‘If We Don’t Win, There’s No Money’: Trump Sparks Outrage in North Carolina With Camp Lejeune Compensation Warning

President Donald Trump has stirred up anger in North Carolina after suggesting that compensation for families affected by the Camp Lejeune water contamination scandal could hinge on Republicans winning the upcoming midterm elections. For the veterans and loved ones who have spent years waiting for justice, the possibility of their long-awaited payouts becoming tangled up in politics has struck a particularly painful nerve.

According to Public Radio East, Trump made the controversial remarks during a campaign rally in Greenville on October 20, where he promised to resolve outstanding compensation claims if Republicans retained control of Congress. “If we don’t win, there’s no money,” he told the crowd, before adding, “If we do win, you’re getting it.” The president also insisted that the money should go directly to affected veterans and their families rather than trial lawyers, promising to bring an end to a nightmare that has dragged on for years.

For those unfamiliar with the tragedy, drinking water at North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base was contaminated with toxic chemicals for decades, potentially exposing more than a million people between the 1950s and 1980s. Many veterans and their families subsequently developed serious illnesses, including cancer, prompting years of legal battles for compensation. Although the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 finally opened the door for victims to seek damages, thousands of claims remain unresolved. According to the Justice Department, more than $879 million had been paid out as of September 2026, but for countless families still waiting for answers, the ordeal is far from over.

Adding to the frustration, the compensation process has been anything but smooth sailing. More than 408,500 administrative claims have been filed, with many families still waiting for their cases to be resolved. A federal court deadline at the end of October is also approaching, adding further urgency to an already lengthy legal battle. For those dealing with serious illnesses or grieving loved ones, the uncertainty surrounding these payouts is especially painful.

North Carolina Residents Slam Trump’s Camp Lejeune Compensation Remarks

Over on Reddit, North Carolina residents were quick to voice their anger over Trump’s remarks, with many questioning why compensation for suffering families should have anything to do with an election. One commenter put it simply: “Human rights and decency should not be tied to a vote.” Another was equally unimpressed, writing, “But I thought the military families were just small potatoes?”

Others were skeptical that Trump’s promise would lead to any meaningful progress. “Wow, he’s gonna fix everything right after midterms? That’s totally believable, unlike the countless other times he’s promised the same thing,” one sarcastic user remarked. Another took aim at the apparent reaction from the rally audience, commenting, “And in the crowd, there was a thunderous applause.”

For some, however, the biggest concern was the treatment of veterans who have already spent years fighting for compensation. One frustrated commenter described the remarks as “so predatory,” pointing to the difficulties victims have faced getting their claims approved. Their reaction reflected a broader sentiment in the discussion: these families have waited long enough without their suffering becoming another political bargaining chip.
