‘I’ll Be Damned. This State Did Something Right!’: North Carolina Residents Erupt in Celebration as Roy Cooper Ends GOP’s 20-Year Hold on Senate Seat

North Carolina voters have delivered a major political shake-up, and some residents are struggling to contain their excitement. Former Gov. Roy Cooper has defeated Republican Michael Whatley in the state’s U.S. Senate race, flipping a seat held by the GOP for two decades. The historic result has sparked a wave of celebrations online, with some North Carolinians barely able to believe what they’re seeing.

As reported by Reuters, Cooper’s victory comes after a campaign focused heavily on the rising cost of food and energy. The former two-term governor defeated Whatley, who had the backing of President Donald Trump and previously chaired the Republican National Committee. Cooper will now replace retiring Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, giving Democrats a crucial pickup in the Senate.

Beyond the election itself, Cooper’s move to Washington could give North Carolina a stronger voice in debates over federal spending, healthcare, and education. During his time as governor, he frequently clashed with Republican lawmakers over Medicaid expansion and public school funding, issues that remain important to families across the state. However, securing meaningful changes in Congress will require cooperation from lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle.

Interestingly, Cooper used his victory speech in Raleigh to highlight the financial pressures facing ordinary North Carolinians, pointing to families struggling to afford the same groceries they once bought. He also promised to put residents ahead of wealthy political insiders, suggesting that everyday concerns will remain at the heart of his work in Washington. For voters hoping to see some relief from rising costs, that promise could prove particularly important.

The reaction on Reddit was full of excitement, with many users celebrating Cooper’s victory. One commenter summed up their surprise with the blunt declaration, “I’ll be damned. This state did something right!” Another was so overwhelmed by the result that they admitted, “I shrieked so loud it scared my cat!!!“

Others had some fun with Cooper’s impressive election record. “Roy ‘Never Lost An Election’ Cooper,” one user joked, while another gave him an equally fitting nickname: “Roy ‘Never wrote a concession speech’ Cooper.“

For some, the result was particularly meaningful. “As a first time midterm election voter, I’ll proudly say I helped contribute to this!” one commenter shared. However, another was already thinking about the longer-term implications, writing, “The question is can the seat stay blue after him. That to me is the real test.”

As North Carolina looks ahead to a new chapter in Washington, Cooper’s victory has given many residents renewed hope for the future. From rising household bills to concerns over healthcare and education, there are plenty of issues affecting families across the Tar Heel State. Whether Cooper can deliver meaningful change remains to be seen, but for now, many North Carolinians have good reason to feel optimistic about what lies ahead.
