The Democratic Party of Illinois has recently accused Republican gubernatorial nominee Darren Bailey of violating campaign finance disclosure laws. The accusations made waves online, with Illinois residents complaining about the Illinois politician’s perceived shady behavior.

As reported by the Chicago Tribune, Bailey is accused of failing to report a rent-free Chicago apartment allegedly donated to him for his campaign by an undisclosed donor. The complaint was officially filed with the Illinois State Board of Elections earlier this month by the local Democratic Party’s executive director, Ben Hardin.

The main accusation is that the politician has allegedly been living rent-free in the apartment since March 2026, soon after he won the primaries. The apartment was reportedly provided in connection with the campaign, but its use was not disclosed. Illinois law requires candidates to disclose donations of $1,000 or more.

Darren Bailey Criticized By Illinois Residents

Illinois residents were angry, but not surprised, after reading the news when it was shared on r/Illinois. Someone commented sarcastically: “A republican breaking the law? Must be a day that ends in y.” Another added: “It’s always the ones you most suspect.”

There was a widespread sentiment in the thread that the GOP was associated with corruption. As someone said, “Shocker, a republican is corrupt… again.” Others pushed back, however, saying that the Democratic Party was corrupt as well: “More like an Illinois politician breaking the law. You know the Democrats do it too here, right? I’m not defending anyone, I’m just saying we have some pretty bad politicians in general.”

The conversation sparked a wave of cynicism, and one resident said: “I honest to God believe we need a third real party. (Not the independents).” Others lamented: “This madness of Chicago Democrats taxing the state into poverty needs to stop. Not a Bailey fan but as long as we keep electing the fat man our taxes will keep going up and ending up in Chicago in somebody’s pocket.”

It remains to be seen how the case will be resolved, and it is still unknown how it could affect the upcoming Illinois gubernatorial election, in which Bailey will face JB Pritzker.
