Many believe that staying healthy is pretty expensive, and that statement hits closer to home for those in Chicago, Illinois. Apparently, many gym-goers have complained lately about the high cost of gym memberships. While in the past, going to any of these establishments was a bit more accessible for almost all people, it seems that it is slowly becoming a sort of luxury, as some members just can’t afford it. While some commenters suggested cheaper alternatives, many still argued that gym membership costs should not be rising so quickly.
Reddit user Spencerm269 was the one who sounded the alarm by posting on the Chicago subreddit a thread titled “Sick of these Fitness Gym Prices.” In it, they talk about how fitness is becoming a luxury in this economy. They also mention how certain establishments have been bought out by a bigger gym company, which has allegedly led to the increased costs. Furthermore, they have also noticed how some of the establishments have closed, further reducing the options for some people who want to stay fit.
Initially, many thought this would be a rare case that only affected a few, but the comments showed otherwise, as it seems many in Chicago and around Illinois are struggling with this, to the point that they are looking for cheaper alternatives to continue working out.
Illinois Gym-Goers Are Already Looking for Alternatives
Many gym-goers from all over Illinois, especially those in Chicago, quickly rushed to the comments to share their thoughts on the matter, but most importantly, to share a couple of alternatives for those who are not able to afford a membership anymore.
“If you live near one, Chicago Park District fitness centers are your friend. Not currently registered, but my local one was $15 a month.“
“Not sure if this is an option, but sometimes you can get a membership to certain gyms through your employer. I pay $39/month and get access to LA Fitness, Planet Fitness, and others. It’s not incredibly cheap, but you do get access to multiple gyms.“
Others, however, mentioned that the membership cost issue isn’t just exclusive to gyms, but something that is affecting everything across the country.
“This is everything in life, not just gyms.“
Whatever the reason, many agreed that the rising cost of living has made everyday expenses increasingly difficult to manage, with gym memberships becoming just another example. While some pointed to cheaper alternatives, others argued that affordable fitness options are becoming harder to find.
