In a world where ICE and police terrorize literally everyone, an ice cream shop is not a place you’d expect to offer safety. But a La Michoacana Classic in Berwyn, Illinois, shows it’s looking out for its customers and the community. The business put up signs on its doors, prohibiting any ICE or CBP agents from entering unless they have a valid judicial warrant. And since it’s well-known that the masked Trump goons generally never carry warrants, they simply aren’t allowed entry into the shop.
Speaking of masks, the Berwyn ice cream parlor also banned anyone wearing masks that covered their face, except for medical and religious ones. The ‘secret police-style’ agents of ICE parade about, typically with their faces covered, so the La Michoacana Classic is ensuring it covers all its bases, just in case an agent refuses to visually reveal they’re a fed. Unfortunately, it’s questionable whether such signage will actually keep the far right’s minions from entering, considering how they have official protection from the oppressive regime in DC. Yet, many are still encouraged to see that even local businesses are doing their part to fight back in any way they can.
“Local ice cream shops stand up for freedom. A headline none of us ever imagined,” remarks a Redditor. “This century got nuts, fast.” Others mocked how many Republicans were against people wearing masks during the COVID-19 pandemic’s peak to save weaker or older people. But now they endorse it when innocents are being abducted or having their livelihoods destroyed. “The same people that refused to wear masks during the pandemic now refuse to take them off,” chimes in a commenter. “You have to remember, if it’s a conservative being inconvenienced, then it’s oppression,” adds another.
One Reddit user pointed out that supporters from both political factions in Berwyn are still trying to help local residents stand up to ICE, despite holding opposing stances against each other. “Truly, Trump knows how to unite people, ๐” they joke.
