It’s no surprise that immigrants are feeling terror with how they’re being treated in America. Even for those who are here legally, it is not uncommon for ICE detainments and arrests to happen. Families can spend hours to months separated, wondering when they’ll ever be reunited. An Illinois woman didn’t want this for her immigrant family. So, she took matters into her own hands and helped them go into hiding to keep them safe. However, now she has to take on all-new responsibilities of her own.
Violet (@viooletttt_) posted a TikTok video stating, “A day in the life of a daughter with immigrant parents who are now in hiding.” She said that she had to take on a lot of new responsibilities since her parents are unable to go out in public in Illinois. She’s scared that ICE is going to take them away, as has been happening all over Chicago and many other populated areas of Illinois.
In Violet’s new normal, she goes and washes her parent’s clothing at a laundromat and then runs to the grocery store. She said it “broke her heart” that her parents can’t even grocery shop because they’re so scared. Violet took the groceries home and then made lunch for them. She said that everything going on in Chicago is “truly disheartening.” You can tell that it’s completely ripping families apart. She went on to say in her caption, “They can’t go anywhere without running the risk of never coming back home. I’m not sure how long we can hide for but my heart aches to go out by myself and do all the things we used to do together.”
Commenters sympathized with Violet, completely understanding of how the country feels right now for immigrants. One commenter stated, “This is literally how Anne Frank’s diary sounded. Wake up people. This is not okay.” Another person shared their own personal story. They said, “My dad is self deporting this week and I’m heartbroken. He’s the only person I have, he was the only parent I live with. Now I’ll be living on my own with my brother and I’m so scared to be on my own.” It’s sincerely heartbreaking what these families are going through. And when it all comes down to it, this is all happening because people voted for it.
