If you know people on both sides of the political spectrum, you probably know some relationships that were ruined based on how somebody voted. Though people will preach that you should never give up on your fellow people, sometimes it’s necessary for your peace. When somebody has virtually voted against your rights, you have the right to detach yourself from that situation. An Illinois woman tearfully shares in her TikTok video how conservatism has split her family in ways that she never expected.
Beth (@beth_in_chicago) shared a video about a recent conversation she had with her brother that left her heartbroken. She shared a video with her brother of political strategist Steve Bannon saying that “Trump is gonna be President in 2028.” When he’s asked about the 22nd amendment, referencing the fact that no President can be elected to office over two times, he brushes off the interviewer. He says people need to get “accommodated” to the fact that Trump will be president in 2028. He also goes on to say there’s a “plan” and, quite frankly, that’s horrifying.
Beth’s brother didn’t react in the way she expected. He sent Beth back a prayer emoji and texted her, “Anything is better than what your side can produce.” Beth explains that her mom is conservative, as well as several other family members. But she said hearing him speak this way showed her his true colors and the fact that there are people in our own “backyards” who don’t care about us. She said that this broke her heart because she expected nothing but love from the people she cares about. It really changes your opinion about them.
The thing is, people need to stop feeling guilty about the fact that you need to choose your happiness. If that means separating from family members with adverse ideals, sometimes it needs to happen for your mental health. Beth says that people need to understand that “we don’t live in a functioning democracy right now. The president behaving like a tyrannical dictator… and they’re cheering him on.” It causes a lot of grief knowing that people agree with him and that they would choose people’s downfall over betraying him.
As one commenter stated on Beth’s video, “I feel like the hardest thing is the realization that the people in your life you thought were good people, aren’t good people. Cause I don’t think there’s any way to reconcile being MAGA and still being a good person.” Another person replied, “After 2016 I thought ‘they just don’t realize who he is.’ After 2024, it was the solemn realization that they do and they’re ok with it.” And if they’re okay with it, that doesn’t mean you have to be okay with them. In our country’s current state of affairs, it’s important to do what makes gives you the best life experience. Warning: Some loved ones may get left behind.
