Racism does not appear to be targeted at adults alone, as a 13-year-old boy in Virginia defied the odds by boldly speaking out against an issue his school board at Gainesville Middle School allowed to slip through the cracks, while he continued to bear the pain.
In a solemn, heartbreaking clip posted on TikTok, the young boy addressed the school board directly, delivering an emotional, powerful speech. “Good evening, members of the school board, my name is Jefferson McClellan,” he began, introducing himself as an 8th grader.
He continued by recalling a deeply disturbing statement directed at him at school:
“The only game a Black person can beat a White person at is hangman,” emphasizing that racism was a serious issue in his school. He added that he had also been called a monkey and the N-word.
McClellan clarified, “These are racial slurs said directly to me by other students.” He explained that he had previously reported the harassment, but nothing was done, and the behavior continued. Eventually, he said, he took matters into his own hands after another student told him, “shut up, N-word.” According to McClellan, the school responded immediately, but not in his favor. He was suspended for three days following the incident.
“I’m here asking why when racism was directed at me, the response is slow or silent, but when I react to it, the response is immediate and clear,” he declared to the board. He went on, “I’m not asking for special treatment, I’m asking you to stop allowing people to hurt me.” He acknowledged that racism exists, but said he never expected to be dealing with it as a child. At just thirteen, Jefferson explained, he wants to live like a kid, not fight racism.

He concluded with a powerful statement: “I am not bad, I am not threatening, I am not aggressive, I am not lesser, I am just a kid who wants to go to school and feel safe. This shouldn’t keep happening to me, not anyone else.” As he left the stage, applause could be heard from the crowd behind the camera. The comment section reflected deep empathy and outrage, with many viewers voicing their support and frustration.
“WHY does he have to ASK a whole school board to just live a normal childhood life? That is the biggest problem. That school and the people behind it need to be held accountable,” one user wrote. Another highlighted the broader consequences of unchecked racism, stating, “racism being unchecked is exactly why America is where it’s at now.” This commenter applauded, “God bless him for standing up for himself, both on the playground and with the adults in charge.”
One person called for immediate action, writing, “His parents need to sue the school district and also transfer him out. [Expletive] that school.” Another user added, “You should not have to deal with this at 13. Thank you for speaking out.❤️” A commenter expressed empathy, saying, “Young man, I am so sorry the adults in your life are failing you.💔” Another reflected on the persistence of racism, writing, “He’s only 13. He’s been subjected to horrific racism. I thought the US was better these days. It’s the same horrible insults. Poor guy. So unfair. Took him courage to give that amazing speech. Has he got enough support?”
One final comment captured the emotional weight of the clip, “This literally makes me feel sick to my stomach & moved me to tears. Do better people! Racism is taught & I’m so damn sick of it!”
