An Indiana woman posts updates about living in a blackout for over a week. According to her TikTok channel, the power outage was caused by a tornado that went through her town of Gary. Her first two videos had the tally at 6 days without power. Additionally, she claims the situation is even more stressful as she lives in one of the “highest crime cities” in the state.
She describes the blackout as “one of the worst ever for Indiana.” The woman is nervous to return to her house due to alleged break-ins and people running up to cars. But she “can’t afford to stay in hotels any longer.” Another video she posted is from day 7 without power. She provides a little insight into efforts to restore power and how she (and her children) are doing. She explains, “I’m exhausted and hot, irritated and hungry.” The family is currently without food as the only locations, Family Dollar and a grocery store, are closed. The woman states, “That refrigerator is as empty as my soul.”
Furthermore, part of her struggle is being a mom, with an autistic daughter whose “screentime has been zero, while [her] irritation time has been 100.” Her daughter’s calm time was watching educational videos, which she doesn’t have access to. They’re currently using little battery-operated lanterns in the bathroom. But they’re unable to do something about the heat: “Inside my house is 80 degrees because we have no AC.” There are holes in her roof from a tree that collapsed, and they’re currently being told they don’t know when power will be restored. This is allegedly because restoration has been paused after someone was accused of shooting at a NIPSCO worker. Her video has reached over 598,000 views, over 92,000 likes, and over 1,400 comments.
Many Shocked About Indiana Blackout
Many are shocked that they haven’t heard more about the Indiana blackout. One person asks, “Why has this not been nationally reported so people can come help and provide resources??? Thank you for informing the community.” Another commenter says, “No one in California is hearing anything about this.” A third comment reads, “This is absolutely crazy. What in the purge is going on?”
Meanwhile, several offer support and want to know how to help. Many offer their sympathies, such as one commenter who says, “A blackout in 2. Gary, Indiana, with a 3. Autistic Child sounds like genuine [expletive].” Some have offered food, advice on dealing with the heat, and encouragement. A commenter says, “I’m praying for things to go better, girl!” Another person says, “So very sorry you and your community are going through this.”
The Indiana woman has a GoFundMe, which can be found in a link on her TikTok channel. Her most recent update video (August 20) puts her time without power at 10 days.
