Airbnb has been around the world for a while, and while we can’t deny how helpful or comfortable renting an Airbnb property is, the truth is that certain aspects of this service have gone off the rails. We’re mainly talking about cleaning fees, which have become a hot topic in the Airbnb community recently, and one TikToker from North Carolina did an excellent job explaining why. Recently, several rental properties have increased their cleaning costs to the point that some guests refuse to clean and are even considering returning to hotels.
This North Carolina TikToker talks about seeing a video in which an Airbnb owner said their property was “dirty” and that she doesn´t like cleaning fees. It would seem that the guests left some used-up blankets. The Airbnb owner reacted, saying, “Well, I guess I need to get someone to clean this up.” Of course, this would involve a cleaning fee for guests and possibly for anyone planning to rent this property in the future.
The OP claims the owner overreacted to a couple of sheets and says situations like this lead owners to add ridiculous cleaning fees.
The woman in the video also says she has traveled before and used Airbnb, but as soon as she spots a cleaning fee, she says, “I am not cleaning a thing,” especially since the cleaning fee can cost up to $200, according to her.
That’s not to say she doesn’t tidy up. She mentions how she has taken the trash out and picked up after herself, especially in places where she has stayed for at least a month. Still, she believes these cleaning costs are getting out of hand, and it seems many people agree with her.
“This is why hotels stay in business. Airbnb has gotten so out of hand.” – Kiki via TikTok.
“If there is a cleaning fee, I will NOT be cleaning.” – Sophia via TikTok.
As you can see, the general consensus is that people who pay a cleaning fee do not want to clean after them, since the owner is already doing that. Still, there are hosts just like the one OP mentions who tend to overreact or even complain about guests for leaving things dirty, despite already charging for the service they will provide.
In any case, it seems people aren’t too excited to use Airbnb anymore, despite how helpful it might be in some situations. Yet in cases like this, a hotel doesn’t sound too bad.
