This is a big week for Comic readers as the president of Image Comics, Todd McFarlane, revealed the cover to issue #300 of his popular series, SPAWN. Fan-favorite artist J. Scott Campbell contributed his skills for this historic and record-setting comic issue. With this and the upcoming SPAWN #301, the popular anti-hero series becomes the longest-running creator-owned comic series in the world.
The cover itself shows SPAWN in all his amazing glory, with a heartbreakingly beautiful stain glass window behind him. The imagery of Spawn in what seems to be a church lets us know that his battle against the forces of hell is still going strong. To celebrate this incredible milestone Image is releasing a deluxe 75-page issue to go along with this gorgeous artwork. Todd McFarlane himself will be drawing out the historic issues himself and adding his unique blend of hyper-realism, amazing world-building and over the top character art.
The Historical, record-setting, supersized issue number 300 will be available for purchase on August 28th, 2019. The final order cutoff deadline for retailers is August 5th, 2019.
Issue 301 also has had a couple of cover ideas making its rounds on the internet. This one, while still going to be a massive issue, is only going to be around half the size as its predecessor at around 48 pages.
This one is a little simplistic but great in its own right. It calls back to the early days of the Spawn comics with the more 90’s art style, and possibly a callback to McFarlanes days drawing for Marvels Spider-Man.
The other idea seems a little more contemporary and once again outlines McFarlane’s love for hyper-realism and super complicated character design.
The record-breaking news of this announcement only highlights the excitement of the upcoming movie directed by Todd McFarlane himself, and reportedly starring Jamie Foxx and even a possible Mortal Kombat 11 cameo.
Issue 301 will hit stands on September 25th, 2019 with the deadline for retailers to order being on September 5th, 2019.
