After almost twenty years of waiting, we have finally received the first official trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence. A direct sequel (all be it twenty years in the future) to the beloved 90’s blockbuster Independence Day with director Roland Emmerich remaining at the helm. Other notable returns include actors Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner who will be reprising all of their former roles. Sadly Will Smith will not be coming back for this though it does beg the question if they will explain his absence at all. Before we get into the details, have a look for yourself below!

Totally radical right? (Sorry, I am just getting all my 90’s slang out of the way.) Though one has to wonder how much of the old film’s style will make it into this sequel, as the original was drenched in an odd 90’s charm. Independence Day: Resurgence could very well be a return to form for the science fiction blockbuster genre as the original is very much a staple in movie history. While it certainly looks far nicer, thanks to some impressive CGI, hopefully, that won’t dominate the majority of the film’s look and disregard the memorable characters. As fun and entertaining as watching a united human race fighting against an unrelenting horde of extraterrestrials, the archetype of characters throughout really made the movie something else. I do like that it appears to be the same alien menace as before and we have adapted their technology to suit our own needs, but for now, only time will tell… Also, I sort of feel bad for Liam Hemsworth as he is clearly the stand-in for what probably would have been Will Smith’s role. Either way, I am quite excited for Independence Day: Resurgence!
