An Indiana family shared devastating news on social media: within just a year of purchasing their new home, disaster struck. The house was so badly flooded, the entire basement was inaccessible. Now, viewers online are debating if this could’ve been avoided.

Posted by TikTok user PrahTydnA, Andy, she and her husband had just bought a home in Ravenswood, Indiana 10 months prior. “We assumed we’d be there a lot longer,” she wrote in the caption of her TikTok video.

Andy then pans around the neighborhood, from the relative safety of her porch. In and around her home, the area is so badly flooded, it nearly reaches the main floor of her home. Her basement got the worst of it. However, the main sections of her home didn’t avoid damage. Puddles of water and mud — even a dead fish — are all over the living room and kitchen.

The furniture didn’t escape the flooding, either. Andy walks out onto the back porch to show the rest of the mess, which has taken over the entire neighborhood. The water is so high that it almost covers half of their pickup truck in the backyard.

Viewers call out realtors, arguing this could’ve been avoided

Although the area Andy and her husband bought a home in is considered a flood zone, viewers on TikTok wondered if they even knew that in the first place. Rather than put the blame on the couple for their ignorance, commenters placed the blame on realtors. “They knew this and sold you the house,” a viewer speculated.

One commenter shared they had toured the home while it was still on the market. “We almost put in an offer, but our real estate agent had warned us that the wood was rotting from a previous flood and that the house would cost more to fix than it was worth, so we ultimately decided against it.” In the following thread, a viewer wondered if Andy’s realtor “purposefully didn’t disclose” that information.

Another commenter placed the blame on Andy and her husband. They wrote that the listing on Zillow rated the home as a “9 out of 10 in the flood zone” and experienced flooding before. “Why would you even put an offer in,” they asked. Many viewers found their comment insensitive.

So, where does a family turn from here? According to an update on the family’s GoFundMe, the entire home was deemed entirely “damaged” from the flood. Now, they’re going to have to rebuild and hope for the best.
