Massachusetts residents are expressing outrage after a state investigation documented decades of child sexual abuse across the Catholic dioceses of Fall River, Springfield, and Worcester.
The report from Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell’s office found evidence that more than 270 Catholic clerics abused 944 children over several decades. Investigators also concluded that church leaders frequently failed to respond adequately to allegations and warning signs.
In some cases, accused priests were allegedly transferred to different parishes without families being told why. Although most of the documented abuse occurred before 2002, Campbell said some institutional shortcomings involving training, recordkeeping, investigations, and supervision have continued.
“Too often they protected the reputation of the church, rather than protecting children,” Campbell said while releasing the findings.
Massachusetts Residents React
The revelations quickly sparked anger in a widely discussed r/Massachusetts Reddit thread. Many commenters argued that apologies and internal reforms were no longer sufficient.
“The Catholic Church should lose its tax-exempt status,” one Massachusetts commenter wrote.
Another person called for financial consequences, writing, “Sue them into oblivion and give it all to the church’s victims.”
A third commenter focused on what they viewed as an inadequate response to years of institutional failures. “Christ almighty, it really just doesn’t stop,” the user wrote. “Individual punishment isn’t enough.”
“Or we can stop protecting a cult of people who believe in an imaginary fairy in the sky who lets people sexually abuse children and get away with it.”
The investigation did not produce widespread new indictments. Campbell explained that statutes of limitations, outdated laws, and other legal restrictions prevented her office from prosecuting much of the conduct. Three cases were referred to district attorneys, with one resulting in criminal charges.
For many Massachusetts residents reacting online, that legal reality only added to the anger. The report may provide a long-awaited public accounting, but commenters repeatedly questioned whether meaningful accountability will ever follow.
