The emotional letter Liam Payne penned to his 10-year-old self has resurfaced a day after his tragic demise. BBC Radio 2 host Scott Mills revealed the “poignant” note in an Instagram post on Thursday, October 17. “During the pandemic, Liam came on my show. And we were asking people to write a letter to their 10-year-old selves. Liam’s is so poignant today,” Millis explained. He warned listeners that the singer’s message was “sad to listen to” before the clip cut to Payne.
“Dear 10-year-old Liam, get ready; it’s about to get a little bumpy. Cherish every moment with your loved ones right now as there’s only a few more family holidays to enjoy,” the late One Direction star began. “Life is about to turn surreal. You know that thing you love singing? Keep it up. When you turn 14, something magical is going to happen. And I’m not talking about puberty,” Payne continued. He reflected on his rise to stardom, telling his 10-year-old self:
“Not only will you audition for one of the biggest music shows in the world, but you’ll also meet the future mother of your child. I know, seems early, but just trust me, it’s all going to work out however it’s supposed to.”
“I suggest you watch ‘Back to the Future.’ It might help. You are now famous, and it feels like you’ve peaked way too early,” Payne added. He advised his younger self to relax and remember, “It’s a marathon, not a sprint.” The “Strip That Down” singer reflected on nearly giving up but advised his younger self not to. “You’re about to meet 4 of the guys on the same track as you. When you first meet them, it’s gonna be chaos,” Payne continued, noting:
“But just remember to enjoy yourself. Stay young at heart, as that’s what this point of your life is all about. Forgive more and learn to listen. You will have the most amazing time of your life. Travel the world and live a life you barely imagined.”
Liam Payne Found a New Purpose Following One Direction’s Split
Payne got vulnerable with his 10-year-old self about the end of life with One Direction. Although the band’s split was a dark moment in the singer’s life, he found a new purpose as a father. “Then it will end for a while, and you are left with nothing but the steering wheel. It will feel scary, like you’re alone, but you are not. You’re about to start a totally new journey with the most amazing person you’ve met so far, your son, Bear,” Payne confessed.
“Don’t doubt yourself with this dad thing. Just look at all the things you’ve learned along the way. Surely, that must mean you’ve got a lot to give,” he continued. Payne advised his younger self to appreciate each day and love what “took ten years to build.” The late singer concluded in his letter writing:
“The first single will skyrocket, and you’ll never see it coming, but stop with the self-doubt, and you’ll be fine. Give mom, dad, and all the family a big hug from me.”
Liam Payne died after tragically falling from his hotel balcony in Argentina on Wednesday, October 16. The investigation into his death is still ongoing.
