Is Arkane Austin and Bethesda Softworks’ Redfall an open-world game? As many know, Open-world titles allow players to explore freely all-encompassing, non-linear maps. Most of the early gameplay footage and trailers for Redfall suggest it takes place in a large area similar to an open world. The game exclusively takes place on a fictional island town in Massachusetts called Redfall. Moreover, players can traverse all over the island, fighting off the undead in many unique locations. Is the entire town of Redfall one seamless map that players explore, or is it split into multiple sections, as seen in Arkane Austin’s Deathloop?
Is Redfall an Open World?
Arkane Austin boasts that Redfall is one of its most ambitious titles yet. What’s more, the studio describes it as a horror first-person shooter with elaborate lore and playable characters with supernatural abilities. Fans were concerned that Redfall‘s gameplay would be toned down compared to the studio’s previous renowned titles. They worry the game would focus more on multiplayer than the usually tight single-player focus the studio is known for. Fortunately, Redfall has an intuitive single-player option, matching other elaborate single-player modes, as seen in Deathloop and Dishonored.
As part of the studios’ greater ambition for Redfall, the game is described as an open-world game. Players can travel throughout Redfall Island as if it is one seamless open map. Furthermore, the game’s main mission is to reclaim the land from the vampires. Players need to liberate areas known as Vampire Nests to get land back.
In addition, there are also cultist outposts around Redfall that players have to take down to free the island. Players will start at a home base, where they can return to recuperate. Players can also freely use safe houses scattered throughout the map. Bonus and optional objectives include infiltrating strongholds, saving non-playable characters (NPCs), and finding collectibles.

How Does Multiplayer Work in Redfall?
Players can play through the open world of Redfall via co-op. Up to four players can join a game, and each player can select one of the main playable survivors. Additionally, each survivor has their own unique powers and skill sets. Each player is free to explore the open world of the game in any way they feel fit. However, any progression made in Redfall’s story is only carried through the person hosting. If you are someone who joins in on another player’s campaign mission, none of the story progression made while playing will be transferred to your version of the game.
