Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 features a plethora of iconic villains from Webhead’s rogues gallery. The game stars multiple famous supervillains, most noticeably Kraven the Hunter and Venom. However, the most prominent omitted villain from the first Spider-Man title is the web-slinger’s archnemesis, the Green Goblin. The Goblin’s alter ego, Norman Osborn, is featured heavily in both games. He was the mayor of New York City in the first title before stepping down due to the scandal caused by the events of the game. Does he finally take over the Green Goblin mantle and ride the glider in Spider-Man 2?
Does Spider-Man 2 Have the Green Goblin?
Spoilers for the events of Spider-Man 2.
There’s no Green Goblin in Spider-Man 2, yet the title foreshadows the villain may arrive sooner rather than later. The end of the original Marvel’s Spider-Man revealed that Norman’s son, Harry, has been deadly sick for a while. Norman put his son into stasis and attached him to the Venom symbiote to save his life. Spider-Man 2 further explores the ramifications of Harry’s bond with the symbiote, becoming the game’s primary antagonist.
Eventually, Peter Parker and Miles Morales prevent Venom’s invasion of New York at the end of the video game. Harry is put back into a coma, angering Norman Osborn, who blames the superheroes for his son’s condition. Norman orders G-serum to be used on his son.
Spider-Man fans can recognize the G-serum is more than likely the Goblin Formula from the comics. The Goblin Formula is what gave Norman superhuman strength and durability but also caused him to go mad. With Norman bringing out the G-serum to save his son, the Green Goblin may finally arrive in the Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man series. Harry Osborn has also been known to be the Green Goblin in the comics. Harry may end up becoming Venom and Green Goblin in the Insomniac franchise.
The mid-credits scene of Spider-Man 2 shows Norman Osborn meeting with Otto Octavius, aka Dr. Octopus. Norman demands to know the original web-slinger’s secret identity, but Octavius refuses. This scene further hints at Norman’s turn into supervillainy.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 continues Peter Parker’s and Miles Morales’ adventures as superheroes. The game is a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
