‘It Was Racist. It Was a Racist Race’: Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett Sparks Backlash After Primary Loss Comments

Curious timing.

Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett stated that she lost the Democratic primary to James Talarico because “It was racist. It was a racist race.” The remarks, made during a panel appearance at the Global Black Economic Forum in New Orleans, have drawn significant attention online after a video clip of the comments circulated on X. The comments relate to the Texas Senate race.

Jasmine Crockett on why she lost the Democrat primary to James talarico:

In the footage, Rep. Jasmine Crockett sits on stage with other panelists. She explains her approach, stating, “The best thing I’m gonna do for James Talarico isn’t me standing on a stage with him. It is the fact that I endorsed five candidates in the runoff who all happened to be Black men in the state of Texas, and instead focuses on uplifting lesser-known down-ballot candidates to increase voter participation.

She then addresses critics, saying, “You see, a lot of haters got a lot of things to say about me and my race and how I ran it, but the reality is that there was a lot of racism, not a lot of it. It was racist. It was a racist race. It is what it is, right? We live in America as y’all are celebrating 250, OK, but we know what this country is.”

The clip shows her addressing the audience and fellow panelists during the event. Still, it does not include the full panel discussion, any preceding questions, or additional context around her primary loss to James Talarico in the Texas Democratic U.S. Senate race.

How Online Users Responded to Crockett’s Primary Remarks

Some commenters urged Democratic unity and warned against external attempts to sow division. One user wrote: “FYI – This is Ken Paxton’s PAC who is using clips of Jasmine Crockett to rehash the division of the Democratic Primary race. Don’t let republicans fuel the divide! Both opponents were electable, and the majority chose James. It’s time to rally behind him and not let Paxton win.”

Others expressed strong criticism of Crockett’s explanation and performance. One reply stated: “She’s such a sore loser. It seems like she forgot that Dems JUST elected a Black man in 2024 for Senate. She also seems to be forgetting that she can advocate for multiple candidates at different levels. It’s ridiculous that she can find time to fly to California to get involved in the California governor’s race, but apparently can only focus on downballot races in Texas.”

Another said: “Anything but admit she *expletive* sucks lmao!”

Additional responses rejected the racism claim and pointed to other factors. One commenter noted: “This is *expletive*. James never did or said anything racist. He conducted himself as a gentleman the whole way through. … The only racism was in her head. I used to like and respect Jasmine, but now I truly hate her and what she stands for.”

Another added: “She lost because she is inauthentic, and black people know that too. She spent most of her life trying to be a white girl until it paid off to act black for her political career. Also, people want someone who will get things done and not just aim for viral sound clips.”

It remains unclear whether Crockett’s remarks will influence voter turnout or Democratic strategy in the Texas Senate race. The clip continues to circulate online as users discuss the primary outcome and her comments from the forum.
