A memorial site in Minneapolis, Minnesota, did not appear to be off-limits to someone who allegedly attempted to burn it down. The incident occurred months after protests erupted over the death of Renee Good, who was shot to death by an ICE agent. Now, her vigil site was nearly reduced to ashes.
In a video posted on Instagram, a man could be heard from behind the camera saying, “Somebody just came by a few minutes ago and tried to set Renee Good’s vigil on fire.” As he spoke, the camera panned across the area, revealing several containers filled with gasoline. In another section of the site, pieces of wood had already been piled, with a gasoline container placed between them, apparently intended to ignite the vigil that represents the brave Minnesota citizen.
“We definitely just had an arson over at the vigil of Renee Good,” the man said, explaining that although the situation was contained in time, there had clearly been an attempt to destroy the memorial. He continued to pan the camera, showing Minnesota officials at the scene alongside a fire truck. The comment section quickly filled with outrage and disbelief.
“It’s not enough they murdered her!!!” one user wrote. Another asked, “What kind of people walk among us???”
A user offered a broader reflection on the act, writing, “See, this is another way you can tell who is actually doing what’s right. People who aren’t doing what’s right are the ones willing to light up a memorial of someone who passed, simply because they want an ego boost and are emotional. This was someone’s daughter, sister, mother, friend, etc.”
Another commenter suggested a motive behind the attack, stating, “This isn’t because they think she tried to attack an officer, this is because the truth came out and exposed ICE as killers and abusers to the American people.”
“What if the whole neighborhood caught fire!? Hope they find who did it,” one person wrote, while another emphasized the potential danger, “Not to mention could have burnt people’s homes down wtf is wrong with this world it’s like hell.” “You have to be a truly sick human to burn a memorial,” another commenter added.
