Jason Aaron is bringing his storytelling style to DC’s Action Comics with a new Superman story. The long-time Marvel writer is tackling a story that puts the Man of Steel against some of his iconic villains. That roster includes Bizarro, the opposite of Superman, who Aaron teases will be scarier than ever before. During a panel at England’s Thought Bubble festival, the writer spoke about his upcoming venture into Clark Kent and what fans can expect.

During Thought Bubble, Jason Aaron shared his reasons for utilizing Bizarro in his upcoming Action Comics story. He feels that a more serious Bizarro is the perfect fit for a “Man of Steel vs. villains” story because the foe is often underestimated. More popular foes, like the Joker and Penguin, tend to take precedence over folks like Bizarro. However, Aaron wants to ensure his take on a Clark Kent story sticks to what people love about the characters but injects something new.

Specifically, the writer returned to the popular 50’s stories that featured Bizarro in an unflattering light. He is almost like a bumbling foil to Superman where being the reverse of Clark Kent means he is unintelligent and not a worthy adversary. So, Aaron is putting a darker twist on the villain. However, how Aaron plans to make Bizarro scarier and darker is anyone’s guess. However, he hopes readers will see Bizarro is a villain to (finally) take seriously.

Action Comics Nerves

While Jason Aaron is excited to hop on the Superman train, taking on such an iconic character can be nerve-wracking. The writer shared that the nerves about what he was taking on started before writing anything. In fact, it felt like it was the first comic he had ever written all over again. So, Aaron did what anyone would and could do in his situation: call on Mark Waid. The iconic Superman writer was there to give Aaron a few tips and to reassure him that he had the capacity to create something Superman fans would love for years to come.
