I ain’t afraid of no ghost. I am, however, afraid of the recently announced Ghostbusters sequel. Sony has announced (via an exclusive from Entertainment Weekly) that the next film in the franchise will release in the summer of 2020 and will hopefully filming will begin in the next few months.

Whilst this new film hasn’t been given the title of Ghostbusters 3 yet, as far as I’m aware, it will act as a modern-day continuation of the original 2 movies, ignoring the recent female reboot. We can think of the 2 as different universes.

Ghostbusters

Director of the 1984 original, Ivan Reitman will serve as a producer this time around and has passed the directorial torch on to his son, Jason Reitman (Juno). Who had this to say:

“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans,” Reitman says. “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

No word yet on the story or who will star in the film. All we know at present is that it is based in the same universe as the 80’s movies. This could be with new characters, the old or maybe a combination of the two. Dan Akroyd has been talking recently about the chances of a Ghostbusters 3 and was optimistic that stumbling block Bill Murray would return in some capacity. Possibly being killed off in the first scene and returning as a ghost. I quite like that idea.

It goes without saying but one star who won’t return is Harold Ramis, who played Egon. Unfortunately, the actor passed away in 2014. He will be missed but I’m sure they’ll find an appropriate way to pay tribute to him.

Hopefully, we find out more in the coming months. In the meantime Jason Reitman told Entertainment Weekly:

“This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present. We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet,”

I’m fine if these new characters are new Ghostbusters, I just hope that Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson return in a capacity that is more than just a cameo. I’d be more than content with them training up the new generation of Ghostbusters, much like the plot for the Ghostbusters game.

With a release of next year, it won’t be too long to wait. I’m nervous and hopeful at the same time. What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments below!
