There’s no doubt that JK Rowling has become one of the most hated authors and celebrities this decade, despite creating one of the most beloved fantasy franchises ever. Now, the Harry Potter author has practically dialed up her transphobia with a personally funded anti-trans organization that seeks to protect and fund transphobes, and we all know how JK Rowling attained the wealth for such an endeavor.
The announcement itself came from JK Rowling back on May 24, where she commented on an X thread about her plans to privately fund an anti-transgender organization. The website is actually up now, and it’s called none other than J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund.
In case the tweet gets deleted, here’s what JK Rowling actually said:
“I looked into all options and a private fund is the most efficient, streamlined way for me to do this. Lots of people are offering to contribute, which I truly appreciate, but there are many other women’s rights orgs that could do with the money, so donate away, just not to me!” says JK Rowling in the tweet
According to Rowling, her organization offers legal and financial support to anyone who might have lost their jobs due to their “beliefs” against transgenders. They don’t exactly provide the lawyers, but more of advice on how to proceed legally. Regardless, I can’t imagine those beliefs would be anything useful or productive to society, especially if such beliefs are rooted in hate and prejudice.
JK Rowling has repeatedly voiced out her transphobia, especially in her X/Twitter account over the years. At the time, it was even an odd concern considering Rowling outed herself as a transphobe in the middle of the pandemic when hundreds of thousands of people were dying from COVID.
What does this mean for HBO’s Harry Potter?
HBO’s Harry Potter series is set to premiere in 2026, and seeing as JK Rowling is still the license and copyright holder for the franchise, that means more money for her and her anti-trans beliefs. This money will then possibly be used to further fund the J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund so that transphobes can have their own support system and continue with their organization rooted in hate.
The absurdity of the situation has led to the original Harry Potter movie cast– such as Daniel Radcliffe– distancing themselves from JK Rowling. Sadly, the new Harry Potter series cast might not be able to do that as easily. It’s going to be a tough minefield to navigate for them. In any case, some Harry Potter fans have spoken up about what became of JK Rowling, with certain people likening the Harry Potter author to the most infamous villain in the franchise.
“She became Dolores Umbridge. I recall Neil Gaiman fans saying that he had become one of the evil assholes in his books, and I think J K Rowling has done the same thing,” says ShadeStrider12
“Imagine making more money than a king and choosing to actively hate a tiny portion of the population. Rowling is a complete piece of scum and deserves any and everything bad that comes her way. People discriminating against trans folks are the lowest of the low. Out of anyone in the LGBT umbrella, trans folks are getting SO much hate. They need, and deserve support and acceptance. Anything less is actively choosing to be a d***head,” rants ruffznap
“I just don’t get it. I cannot comprehend putting so much effort, and money, into something that has no effect on you,” questions arkofjoy
