The family of Beverly Hills Cop actor John Ashton confirmed his death after a battle with cancer. The actor, who appeared as Detective Sergeant John Taggart in three of the four Beverly Hills Cop films had a fulfilling Hollywood career that spanned over 5 decades. Until his demise, he remained active in the industry, reprising his role in the latest BHC installment, and co-hosting Ashton and Davis Show on 870 ESPN Radio.
A representative for John Ashton’s family broke the news of his death on Sunday in a statement to TMZ. The late actor’s obituary revealed that he passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 26, in Ft. Collins, Colorado. He was 76 and spent his final moments battling cancer. In the statement, the representative Alan Somers noted that his contributions and legacy would keep thriving for generations to come. It read,
“John leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service. His memory will forever be treasured by his wife, children, and grandchildren, as well as his brother, sisters, his extended family, and all who loved him. John’s impact on the world will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.”
His family urged potential donors and well-wishers to make donations in his memory to Pathways Hospice Care. As the John Taggart roleplayer, John Ashton mirrored the tough-minded yet jolly police officer, staring alongside Eddie Murphy in the first, second, and fourth Beverly Hills Cop installments. The role remains his most notable to date.
John Ashton Had a Fulfilling Career Before Death
He joined other iconic cast members earlier this year to attend the premiere of the latest BHC film, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which hit Netflix in July. The premiere, which took place at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills saw John looking as vibrant as ever, as he fraternized with his costars including Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold.
Aside from Beverly Hills Cop, John made notable appearances in a handful of renowned films including Midnight Run, Some Kind of Wonderful, Little Big League and She’s Having a Baby among others. The Springfield Massachusetts native also snagged roles in TV series like M*A*S*H, Police Story, Kojak, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Before his death, John Ashton hosted the Ashton and Davis Show on Sports Radio.
He also embraced his love for golfing, honing his skills and staying up to date with the game. Such was his dedication to things he held dear. Yet, John Ashton’s true passion remains his acting craft, which he found joy in and stayed committed to even as he battled cancer and eventually succumbed to the claws of death. He leaves behind his wife of 24 years Robin Hoye.
