The standalone origin Joker film – that nobody asked for, starring Joaquin Phoenix – has some new information coming straight out of San Diego comic con.
This origin film will supposedly be more of a character study, as opposed to the more flashy and stylized films the character has been featured in previously. It will be written and directed by Todd Phillips, and if that name is familiar then you might know one of the reasons people are worried about this entry in the DC movie universe.
Phillips has exclusively written and directed comedies in his career, including most notably, The Hangover series. It would seem that an origin story of a character of this magnitude should be led by someone with some more dramatic chops, but maybe the dark comedy that his movie will surely have could be the angle that Phillips will come from.
The movie has been confirmed to release in October 4, 2019. The title is going to be short and sweet: Joker. Again, nothing fancy or flashy– just straight to the point. The details of the plot are being kept under wraps of course, but many have very high expectations for this film.
That’s not all of the information that has been leaked out of San Diego this weekend. Zazie Beetz, the actress who has gained a lot of notoriety lately from her role in Deadpool 2, is now being rumored to be up for a main role in the upcoming character film.
While details of the Phillips- and Scott Silver-penned script are being kept under wraps, if a deal is made, Beetz would play a single mother who catches the interest of the man who will become the “clown prince of crime.”
Based on the little information that is available, it kind of sounds like this movie is aiming to take after the very famous Joker origin story: The Killing Joke.
