Joaquin Phoenix plays the role of Arthur Fleck, a man disregarded by society. In a press release, Warner Bros. described Joker as “a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale”. Over the course of the film, we will see Fleck dive deeper into madness as he goes on his path to becoming one of Batman’s greatest foes, The Joker.
This set video is interesting for two reasons. First, we get to truly see Phoenix as the clown prince of crime. His costume is strikingly similar to the character’s bright purple suit in the comics and he is still sporting the “test” makeup seen in the recent teaser.
Second, if you looked closely you would have seen multiple people dressed up in clown attire during the short set video. Whether these people are allies of Fleck or not, there is a possibility that Fleck first dons the iconic clown get-up for this scene at the subway.
Todd Phillip’s Joker is scheduled to be a standalone title for DC. Along with Joaquin Phoenix, the film will star Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, and Brett Cullen. Cullen will reportedly take on the role of Thomas Wayne, Batman’s father.
Joker is currently set to release October 4th, 2019.
