Marvel’s X-Men characters have been a major talking point this year. Writer Jonathan Hickman brought back mutant-kind in a big way with far-reaching consequences. While many fans are enjoying the mutant resurgence, there are readers who dislike the direction that the writer has taken. Now, those hoping that Hickman will stop writing X-Men titles may get their wish.
Jonathan Hickman has written many stories throughout his career. Starting at Image Comics, he eventually started weaving storylines for Marvel, with credits like Avengers and the 2015 Secret Wars event under his belt. Hickman’s run on X-Men began earlier this year, working to reestablish a new status quo for the characters. To that end, he gave mutant-kind their own nation and government, along with the means to make more of their species.
Why Does Jonathan Hickman Want Out?
One would think that Jonathan Hickman would be excited at the prospect of continuing to write stories for beloved comic book characters. However, according to Hickman himself, he is trying very hard to get thrown off the project. Taking to Twitter, Hickman wrote that he is doing everything he can to get fired. Apparently, his attempts are not going well, as Marvel has not announced any news of Hickman’s firing or replacements. Editor of the X-Men comics Jordan D. White confirmed that Hickman’s tweet was indeed serious.
So why would Jonathan Hickman want to quit writing for the X-Family? Is he butting heads with people at Marvel? Or could he simply be experiencing a mutant overload? Hickman wrote House of X and Powers of X, along with X-Men and a few issues for New Mutants. Perhaps he needs a break from the franchise. Unfortunately, no one will know the true reason until Hickman himself gives fans an answer.
