If you’re a fan of 21 Jump Street and Universal monsters, then this news is just for you. Deadline is reporting that Channing Tatum will reunite with directors/writers/producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller for a Universal monster movie. The trio previously worked together on both movies in the buddy cop franchise. Tatum also cameoed as Superman in Lord and Miller’s The LEGO Movie, which was released in 2014.
While Lord and Miller are producing the project, no director has signed on yet. Deadline describes the project as a “modern-day, tongue-in-cheek thriller inspired by Universal’s classic monster legacy”. But the announcement also didn’t bring any news on which of Universal’s characters the team will focus on. Similar to this year’s The Invisible Man, this project will boldly reinvent one of Universal’s beloved monsters. And considering it is meant to be tongue-in-cheek, Lord and Miller are probably great choices. They adapted 21 Jump Street into a comedy from a rather serious police drama series starring Johnny Depp.
Lord and Miller will produce through their Lord Miller production company. Joining them is president Aditya Sood. Tatum will also produce alongside Carolin and Peter Kiernan of Free Association. Reid Carolin (EP on 22 Jump Street) wrote the treatment based on his original idea. Wes Tooke (Midway) is writing the script.
More From the World of Jump Street
Lord and Miller have grown into a powerful production duo since first working on 21 Jump Street. In addition to The LEGO Movie and its sequel, the two also produced the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. Lord also co-wrote the screenplay and a sequel for Spiderverse is currently in development. They also have an Apple TV+ series in development and are working on a reboot of their short-lived but acclaimed Clone High show for MTV.
In other Jump Street news, a long-planned female spin-off recently took a big step by announcing its writing team and new title. Sisters Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin, known for their Emmy-winning work on Bob’s Burgers, also recently signed onto Deadpool 3.
