Justin Trudeau seems to be having the last laugh over Donald Trump. The Canadian prime minister couldn’t help but break out into celebration after his nation defeated the United States hockey team. Connor McDavid of the Canadian squad clinched the victory with an overtime goal, sending the final results to 3-2.
Following the defeat, Trudeau happily gloated. He took to X to shade President Trump and his ongoing threat to absorb Canada as part of the United States. “You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game,” the Prime Minister wrote. However, he didn’t stop there. In a follow-up tweet, he shared a clip of a female hockey player mocking Americans. “The Americans had our flags on their floor in the dressing room, and now I want to know if they want us to sign it.” Seconding her message, Trudeau captioned the video, “What she said!“
While it is pretty unusual for heads of state to troll over sports competitions, the political tension between Canada and the USA heightened the rivalry. Recall that Trump and Trudeau have been at loggerheads after the former proposed Canada as the “51st state” in response to tariff wars. The disagreement in trade policy reportedly inspired Trudeau’s resignation as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party.
Americans Blame Donald Trump For Team USA Hockey’s Loss
The rivalry has since trickled down to citizens and fans of the sport. TMZ reports that Canadian fans booed the pregame rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner in the first matchup. Americans retaliated, jeering as a Canadian singer performed O Canada.
Before the highly-anticipated game, Trump taunted Canada on Truth Social, saying he would call the American team “to spur them on towards victory tonight against Canada, which with FAR LOWER TAXES AND MUCH STRONGER SECURITY, will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished, and very important, Fifty First State.”
Following through with his word, the president, during his call, praised the players for being “really talented” before urging them to “Bring it home.” The White House joined in the mockery, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt saying:
“And we look forward to the United States beating our soon-to-be 51st state, Canada.”
Clearly, that didn’t happen, and hockey fans couldn’t help but blame Trump for jinxing the team. Many lamented “the Trump curse,” referencing his support for the Kansas City Chiefs at the 2025 Super Bowl.
“The Trump curse strikes again. He couldn’t just stay out of it,” one fan slammed. “The KC Chiefs and US Hockey team thank him for his support.”
“The Trump Kiss of Death,” a second comment read.
“Trump’s endorsement is the gift nobody asked for, but everyone gets to suffer through,” a third user added.
Donald Trump has yet to respond to Justin Trudeau’s comments, but with such a resounding loss, it is doubtful he will find the words.
