Metamorphosis – a first-person perspective experience from developer Ovid Works, inspired by the surreal writings of Franz Kafka – puts the player through the eyes of a transforming man who morphs into a bug. Gregor (who is also the main protagonist in Kafka’s 1915 novella of the same name) must adapt to his newly discovered abilities as he embarks on a quest to find out why this alteration has transpired within him.
Redeem your humanity through hand-painted settings of areas you once knew to be commonplace but are now obstacles and challenges for you to prevail. An official release date trailer brings forth a fantastic world of insect society where the bugs live peacefully on their own terms while hiding away from human perceptions. On the norm, they file paperwork, relax in mini jacuzzies, dance with one another, and smoke on the regular.
There is merely a small hint on the main narrative toward the trailer’s final frame, but it sets up the strange world that takes pleasure in Kafka’s “curious imagination”.
Furthermore, there are a couple videos on Metamorphosis‘ Steam page that show how the game moves and feels through the perspective of a bug. There is also a demo that was played by the developer to present the mechanics and the world in a broadcasted feed on the page at the time of this writing. The playable demo is available now through Steam.
The insects have their own language, and platforming seems to be the main ingredient in the game’s core gameplay. Every human-made object is made to look larger than life itself, and the realization of that is exemplified through Gregor’s actions as he crawls, jumps, and sticks to surfaces.
