The new generation of students is so passionate about how they feel toward modern politics. It’s actually impressive, and doesn’t make the future look as bleak. Many young kids and teens are taking it in their own hands to become informed. After all, what affects adults also affects our children — and they get a say, too. One Kansas high school held an ICE walk-out protest, and a local student-ran newspaper gave them the opportunity to voice their opinions.
With a microphone on the very track the students were protesting, SME Harbinger — a newspaper ran but students of Shawnee Mission East — gave them the floor to speak about the protest, and shared the clip on TikTok (SMEharbinger). Numerous students said their piece, culminating in heated criticism towards ICE’s attacks on immigrants and Americans.
One student walks up to the microphone and says “Immigrants built this country!” Another walks by with a megaphone stating, “Trump’s a dictator!” Then, a sophomore at the school walks up and says she has “friends that are immigrants.” Then she proclaims, “no one is illegal on stolen land.”
A ninth grade boy approaches and shares, “My baby brother’s Nanny has been told to stop taking my baby brother out because of ICE. No one should be taken from their home just because of who they are.” One young girl, who spoke of her Mexican family, stated, “If I wasn’t here, I’d be [expletive] disappointed in myself.”
Several students gave similar reasons, either to support their friends of various backgrounds or their own families. As one student shares her story, “My grandparents on my dad’s side are immigrants and I believe that no humans are illegal and this is just nothing short of terrorism. Screw ICE!”
Though some of the comments bemoaned students for sharing their opinions, insisting they’re just kids, it was mostly support. “Proud of these students for standing up for what is right!” stated one commenter.
One of the students that appeared in the video even commented: “I’m so so proud I spoke up against the wrong in this world! everyone use your voice for those who can’t, keep advocating, keep fighting, and ofc FCK ICE!!!”
Another commenter spoke proudly of their “passion” and how it “scares the toxic ones.” Given how the few who didn’t support the students spoke in the comment section, it’s true. High school students or no, they’re doing their civic duty as Americans and protesting wrongdoing.
