Students come up with any excuse to skip a class these days. Most are uncreative and limited to “I’m sick” or “my car battery died.” However, not all class absences are entirely made up for the sake of sleeping in. One Kansas student shocked followers by sending her professor a video from the hospital… after being paralyzed.

The video, posted on TikTok by @lawlynnava, was taken from her hospital bed. “I will be dropping out of the class, sadly,” she starts. “Because I did get paralyzed.” It was revealed in her earlier videos that she was diagnosed with cancer, and a tumor on her spinal cord was responsible for the sudden paralysis.

“I did accidentally drop dead at my intramural basketball game,” she explains, adding, “So I won’t be able to finish my essay, sadly. But I’ll be back next semester, and maybe we can have another class together.” The video, captioned “The pain medicine was working overtime,” has already garnered more than two million views. Thankfully, followers are overwhelmingly supportive.

“I love how you phrased all of this like a verbal email,” one user comments. “She’s never going to email another student about an essay again,” another says. One joked about the professor’s response, saying, “I know the response was ‘Okay. – Sent from my iPhone.'” User @lawlynnava has been documenting her cancer journey on TikTok for some time, receiving a tremendous amount of support from family, friends, and followers.

“‘I will be back next semester,’ hell yeah, still get that degree, queen,” one followed cheered. “Paralyzed and still handling business, I’d give you an automatic A,” another joked. One follower, a college professor, commented on their support, saying, “As a professor, I would be sending flowers and checking in two months later… even after dropping.” @lawlynavva regularly updates her TikTok with treatment progress videos, and has been battling cancer since she was a child.
