She came close to death last year after experiencing an ectopic pregnancy, a condition that is usually treatable with swift medical care.
The real issue wasn’t the pregnancy itself but Florida’s abortion law, which bans most procedures after six weeks. When doctors discovered Kat Cammack’s condition, they hesitated. Even though the embryo had no heartbeat and she was only five weeks along, the staff were terrified of losing their medical licenses or being sent to jail if they gave her the drug needed to end the pregnancy.
Cammack had to fight to get care. She pulled up the legal text on her phone, argued with doctors, and even tried calling Governor Ron DeSantis for help. Eventually, the hospital relented and gave her the treatment. Thanks to that ordeal, the state later issued new guidelines to help prevent similar situations.
The woman is currently pregnant again and is expected to give birth in August. But despite what happened to her, she doesn’t blame the abortion law itself. Instead, she accuses Democrats and activists of spreading fear and misleading medical professionals. She insists that what happened to her wasn’t an abortion.
She also criticized the political debate over reproductive rights, saying it has failed to prioritize the needs of women. Her remarks have drawn criticism, with many pointing out the irony of blaming Democrats for a problem caused by Republican-backed legislation. Critics argue that the confusion and delay were the direct result of Florida lawmakers failing to clearly define medical exceptions like ectopic pregnancy while vowing strict enforcement of the ban.
Many people on the internet are also finding the situation absurd. Kat Cammack has faced criticism for claiming that what she went through wasn’t an abortion. One Redditor sarcastically wrote, “The only moral abortion is my abortion. Now in syndication!” Others called it a clear example of Republican double standards and hypocrisy.
Some users pointed out that Cammack likely received timely treatment because of her political status and connections, something most women in similar situations would not have. One commenter wrote, “Methotrexate does NOT ‘expel the pregnancy.’ It kills the fetus, which allows the body to recognize that it is no longer viable and remove it. If that’s not abortion, I’d really love to hear what is.”
