Within the span of a month, both King Charles III and the Princess of Wales have been diagnosed with cancer. King Charles revealed his diagnosis in early February, whereas Kate’s came about following major abdominal surgery. Her condition was believed to be non-cancerous at the time, but routine follow-ups revealed otherwise. As King Charles makes his first public appearance since Kate’s announcement, his sickly and frail state has left the royals riddled with anxiety.
Charles informed the nation via an audio message that he would be stepping back from the public gaze during his recovery. Subsequently, Charles did not attend Thursday’s Maundy Service. However, Buckingham Palace told the Associated Press that he and Queen Camilla will attend an Easter Sunday service at Windsor Castle’s chapel.
King Charles III Makes First Public Statement Since Kate’s Cancer Diagnosis
All of this extra strain has left Prince William and Kate Middleton fearing for the future as active royals.
“They’ve had to deal with an enormous amount,” Tina Brown said on CBS Mornings. “Because what people haven’t really thought about is the news Charles, the king, has cancer, which came right as her own operation happened, that brings them much closer to the throne.”
“Whatever the prognosis is for Charles, he’s 75 and he has cancer,” Brown continued. “That brings William and Kate far closer to being king and queen. That, I’m told, has plunged them into tremendous anxiety.”
Right now, the couple is juggling raising their three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—with Kate’s recent revelation.

“They’re dealing with these two things,” Brown explained. “They may be king and queen much quicker than they thought — maybe even in the next couple of years if things go wrong — and, she has this shocking diagnosis which she never ever thought she would have plus three young children who she has to tell and handle…I think there was genuine chaos behind the scenes and they’ve been trying to juggle it all.”
After facing criticism for editing her Mother’s Day portrait, Kate took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message and inform the general public of her decision to undergo preventative chemotherapy treatment to fight back against the cancer.
“I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you personally for all the wonderful messages of support and understanding whilst I’ve been recovering from surgery,” Kate said. “It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family. In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London. At the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful, however, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.”
Although Charles is expected to attend the Easter Sunday service, Kate Middleton is not expected to go along. Charles and Queen Camilla are expected to sit separate from the rest of the congregation in an effort to protect the monarch’s health when they attend the service at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle this weekend.
