Katy Perry can’t seem to catch a break. From her new single “Woman’s World” being labeled “cringe” by fans and critics alike to her “Lifetimes” music video being investigated by police for possibly causing environmental damage, the pop star hasn’t had quite the big music comeback she may have expected. Unfortunately, things have only gone further downhill as Katy Perry’s 143 album failed to debut in the top five of the Billboard 200.
Katy Perry’s “143” Album Rollout Fails to Pull In Big Numbers
On Sunday, Sept. 29, Billboard unveiled the chart’s latest results with Future’s Mixtape Pluto debuting at No. 1. The record pulled in an impressive 129,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. It marks the rapper’s third No. 1 album in 2024 and 11th No. 1 album overall in his career.
Chappell Roan’s debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, landed at No. 2 a year following its initial release in September 2023. Meanwhile, Sabrina Carpenter’s sixth studio effort, Short n’ Sweet, came in at No. 3. The records were followed by Post Malone’s F-1 Trillion at No. 4 and Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time at No. 5.
But what about Katy Perry’s 143 album? The singer’s seventh LP failed to crack the top five of the Billboard 200. Instead, it debuted at No. 6 with 48,000 equivalent album units. The lackluster ranking comes just two months after the album’s lead single, “Woman’s World,” also did poorly on the Billboard Hot 100.
After its release on July 11, the single failed to debut in the chart’s top 50 by debuting at No. 63. The following week, it completely missed the Billboard Hot 100 chart altogether.
According to many critics, much of the disappointing reactions toward Katy Perry’s 143 album have been a result of her decision to work with controversial music producer Dr. Luke on the record. Fans have also reacted negatively to the singer’s latest work due to it failing to connect with listeners over its “cringe” lyrics.
While 143 appeared to have missed the mark, perhaps Perry’s next project will receive a better response from fans.
