‘Keep Her Away From Your Kids’: Texas Parents Outraged as GOP Nominee Brandon Herrera Claims Former Teacher Katy Stout Invited Young Students to Drag Shows

Parents heard that.

In a Texas House race, Brandon Herrera shared a stage clip of rival Katy Stout saying a measure passed because “every child in this county belongs to us.” His drag-show claim is unconfirmed. The quote is not.

A video posted by Texas 23rd Congressional District Republican nominee Brandon Herrera shows Democratic rival Katy Padilla Stout speaking on stage in Bexar County, Texas, as he claims she said local children “belong to her.” According to the post, Stout, a former elementary teacher, also invited students to drag shows, though that claim has not been independently confirmed. Online users reacted after the clip circulated, focusing on the remark and the unconfirmed school allegation.

My opponent Katy Stout thinks that your children here in Bexar County belong to her.

Maybe that’s why she invited your elementary schoolers to drag shows as a teacher? 🤨 pic.twitter.com/FFwavCpPWH

The clip shows Stout on a curtained stage with a microphone, speaking to an off-camera audience. In the footage, she says that “passed because we understood that every child in this county belongs to us.” The video does not show what measure she was referring to, and it does not show a classroom, students, or a drag performance.

In the caption, Herrera wrote that his opponent “thinks that your children here in Bexar County belong to her” and asked whether that is “why she invited your elementary schoolers to drag shows as a teacher.” That invitation claim is not shown in the video and has not been independently confirmed.

Stout, a former Northside ISD elementary teacher and child-welfare attorney, has separately described her campaign as focused on families. “My goal has always been to help protect and promote happy, healthy families and to make sure that the most vulnerable members of our communities are not overlooked,” she told the San Antonio Current.

Responses to the Bexar County Campaign Clip

Some viewers treated the line as a parental-rights fight. “Keep her away from your kids,” one commenter wrote.

Another who identified as a teacher said, “The children do not belong to us. They belong to their parents.” A third asked, “Kids belong to ‘us’. Who exactly is ‘us’?”

Others put it more directly: “Every child in TX belongs to his/her PARENTS…NOT to your weird leftist *expletive* & NOT to the state.”

A separate group tied the remark to Herrera’s unconfirmed drag-show claim, calling “drag show readings” for children “foul.”

A smaller set pushed back, saying Herrera would “have to prove that the performance she took the kiddos to was inappropriate” and arguing it “was a book reading,” with a performer who “read for kids & they loved it.”

The clip is now part of the wider TX-23 race, where Herrera and Stout are already trading charges over schools, families, and who speaks for Bexar County children. Online, the fight has settled on that one line, and on whether it was a call for community care or a claim parents reject.
