Even the most amicable divorce has its challenges, and going through a public divorce is even more complicated, as Kelly Clarkson has experienced. The star split from her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock in 2020 after seven years of marriage, and their breakup has been heavily reported on because the singer ended up suing her ex for the commissions he earned when he was her manager. They also had to hash out spousal support (an eye-watering $200,000 monthly). Regardless of how she feels about Blackstock as a partner or businessman, the pair will always be connected on some level because they have two young children.
The former couple are parents to daughter River, who is ten, and a son, Remy, who is eight. This means they have to co-parent and get along as best they can for their kids, which Clarkson reflected on during her appearance on Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce. “There’s a lot that I keep in because … coparenting is fun,” she said (and her comments clearly suggest that it is anything but fun).
What Has Kelly Clarkson Said About Motherhood And Coparenting With Her Ex Husband?
But the part of the interview that got our attention was this: “It’s like, ‘Oh, he couldn’t come because this,’ and I’m like, ‘Okay, cool.’ Do you think I just leave and just sit in the park all day?” Her comments suggest there is more to this story than what she is willing to reveal, and it also paints Blackstock as a sort of absentee dad (or at the very least someone who doesn’t manage his time as well as he could).
Also in the interview, Clarkson discussed being a working mom and the importance of her children understanding this. “Women and men work, and it’s OK,” she said. “And you’re gonna be fine. Like I was a latchkey kid … no one was there, and I turned out all right — kind of.”
Clarkson takes her career seriously, but fans can also tell that she loves being a mother, a topic she has discussed publicly. She was also awarded primary physical custody of their kids, while she and Blackstock share legal custody. Does that leave the singer any time to have a personal life? Maybe.
She has previously discussed how her children are not interested in seeing her return to the dating world. “Both my kids are not [into it, and] they constantly bring it up. ‘Please, we don’t want you to be with anybody else.’ They’re young, so it’s hard to picture their mom with someone else other than their dad,” she told KOST 103.5, per Fox News, in November 2024.
She’s got pressure from her kids to remain single forever, but Kelly Clarkson admitted she was not looking for love; but if it found her, she was not opposed to the experience.
