It’s one thing to have a husband who doesn’t believe in you, but in Kelly Clarkson‘s case, her ex-husband took it to the next level. Not only did Brandom Blackstock, Kelly’s ex-husband, and former talent manager, tell her that she wasn’t sexy enough for the role of The Voice coach, but he also told her that somebody like Rihanna or Blake Shelton would be a much better choice. Several years later, successful singer and songwriter Kelly Clarkson is still broken up over it.

It’s one thing to prove somebody wrong, but to do it in a way that lands you a position on live television and allows you to live your dream must feel amazing, especially in Kelly Clarkson’s case. Kelly claims that her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, tried to deter her from trying to get a position on The Voice as a coach, given that she just didn’t have enough sex appeal.

When Clarkson went to her husband and talent manager at the time and expressed her interest in appearing as a coach on The Voice, he told her that NBC executives were “looking for a more sex symbol type,” according to court documents filed on January 2nd, 2024, which were then obtained by the New York Post. Though she divorced Brandom Blackstock back in 2020, Clarkson claims that “a wife doesn’t forget a time she gets told she’s not a sex symbol,” indicating that Blackstock’s words still hit pretty hard.

According to Clarkson, Blackstock told her that NBC would rather have “someone sexy” like Rihanna, rather than Kelly when it comes to judging in The Voice. He compared her to Blake Shelton, who she was too similar to, and referenced Rihanna again when he stated that NBC wanted to “have someone that was black.”

Jordan is an experienced fantasy writer who spends hours behind her laptop, and lost in the pages of a book. She strives to be a successful gaming blogger, and has no complaint about the hours of game time she used to increase her knowledge of all things “geek”. She primarily writes gaming articles and fantasy novels. Ark: Survival Evolved is a favorite, along with Diablo 3, Warframe and Minecraft lately, though you can’t forget the good old Magic the Gathering card game! Writing about games truly gives her joy as it gives her another perspective to look at games from, a reason to really look into the mechanics of the game.
