Kentucky Hit-And-Run Victim Claims Police Gave Him Ticket Because of His ‘Car Being Parked Incorrectly’

Is a ticket even justifiable here?

A man in Kentucky is drawing attention after being ticketed following a hit-and-run because his car was parked backwards when cops arrived. His wrecked Toyota Camry was awaiting a tow truck pickup on the side of the road when police arrived and ticketed him for it, upsetting him and hundreds of Reddit users.

Posting his story to r/mildlyinfuriating, user JustChr1s said he left his wrecked car before calling a tow truck could arrive the next day, since it was late at night. But while he was away, “apparently someone called [the police] to complain about my car being parked incorrectly,” he claims. After telling the officers what happened, they said he had 24 hours to move his car. What he wasn’t expecting was a ticket in the mail for a parking infraction that the cops allegedly said they wouldn’t write him.

Plenty of users in the comment section believe the Toyota Camry owner should take this ticket to a judge. “Go to court,” says one person. “Hope the cop doesn’t show up or you have an understanding judge.” Another accused the officer of maliciously writing up the ticket because “police are mainly revenue collectors for their jurisdiction.”

Users Question Why the Hit-And-Run Victim Didn’t File a Police Report First

On the other hand, several Redditors questioned why the man didn’t call the police after the hit-and-run happened, as that would have cleared things up from the get-go. “It seems like the best way to accurately document an insurance claim, and to handle your car being a liability and safety hazard to other people on the road,” remarked a commenter. OP claims he reported the incident to his insurance company first, but later admits that he should have made a police report first thing.

Fortunately, this Kentucky hit-and-run victim’s story has a good ending: around 3 weeks after the ticket was issued, it was dismissed, and his car was repaired. “Overall best possible ending given the situation,” he concluded.
