Kentucky Representative Morgan McGarvey posted a video to the social media platform X that features him talking about an ICE detention facility he recently visited. He allegedly spoke with various people admitted to the center and described the conditions as “heartbreaking.”
The replies quickly filled with thousands of comments from people who argue that the focus should instead be on American citizens and crimes committed by people who entered the country illegally. Others defended stricter immigration enforcement altogether.
In the video above, Representative Morgan McGarvey talks to the camera about how his team had visited a Kentucky detention center. He explains that he spoke with someone who “Came into the country legally. He has not been charged or convicted of a crime, but there he is sitting in a Kentucky jail.”
According to the latter half of the video, “this is what happens when the Trump administration sets quotas.” He then shows a news article that states that immigrant arrests surge to 10,000 arrested in as little as five days.
The article also states that, “ICE officials had been told that 2,000 arrests a day was the new standard for enforcement.” Since May 2019, ICE agents have allegedly rounded up at least 60,000 people in custody. Of these, more than 70% do not have a criminal charge against them.
As the post continued gaining traction, the conversation expanded well beyond the original visit.
Comments and Reactions Towards Kentucky Representative Visiting ICE Detention Facility
Some commenters blamed current and former administrations for the state of immigration enforcement. Many of the most-liked responses centered on the idea that enforcing immigration law should remain the priority, regardless of the emotional stories that come from detention facilities.
One user responded by writing, “Yes Morgan, when people commit crimes, families are affected. Also, it costs money to maintain our sovereignty as a nation. These are not novel concepts, why are you pretending like you’re shocked?” Similarly, another comment read, “Yaaaawn. You’re more concerned for non-citizens over actual citizens. This is tearing families apart.”
Others argue that resources should be directed toward American citizens before non-citizens. One commenter asked, “Oh well they should have come legally. Did you visit any jails with actual American citizens?“
Judging by the thousands of replies, neither side appears interested in backing down any time soon. Whether the discussion is about detention centers, deportations, or border enforcement, immigration continues to be one of the internet’s most polarizing topics.
