Kevin Smith is no stranger to directing; first of all, he’s been directing his own movies for years. Furthermore, he directed an episode of Flash season 2 to positive acclaim. And now he’s going to try his hand at directing an episode of Supergirl’s second season.
You will believe a man can cry! Cannot wait to direct an ep of @TheCWSupergirl! Thank you @GBerlanti & @AJKreisberg! https://t.co/WMHnkItj5J

Kevin Smith’s involvement in CW’s TV DC universe is due to get bigger and bigger as EW.com is reporting;
“For The Flash, Smith directed the season 2 episode “The Runaway Dinosaur,” in which Barry (Grant Gustin) was trapped within the Speed Force. He’s slated to return to direct one episode in season 3.”
As already mentioned, Smith is no stranger to helming DC projects. Most noteworthy is his script for Superman Lives; a Superman movie that never went to production. Most noteworthy is the fact that it would have been directed by Tim Burton and had Superman played by Nicholas Cage. Indeed, Smith is such a comics nerd that he named his daughter after Batman villain/antihero Harley Quinn.
Kevin Smith is also on record as saying that he would be interested in directing an episode of Arrow. Given that he has done a 15 issue run in the Green Arrow comics, this may not be a bad idea. Especially relevant is his introduction of the character Mia Dearden. Due to the fact that she is the character who became Speedy (after Smith’s run ended).
It is currently unknown what episode Smith will be directing, but there’s plenty going on in the new season. Between the introduction of Superman and Lena Luthor and the upcoming crossover with the other CW shows, there’s plenty to choose from. Given that Smith is also directing an episode of Flash, he may use his episodes cleverly. He might be in charge of setting up the crossover in both Supergirl and Flash.
