In recent weeks, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has stepped up immigration enforcement operations that critics say are disproportionately affecting ethnic minority communities, especially Somali residents in Minnesota’s Twin Cities. As a result, many residents have voiced frustration with what they describe as ICE’s heavy-handed approach. Amid these concerns, a Minnesota boy has gone viral after vowing to shield his Somali friend from Trump.

I don’t talk about politics with my youngest. I just wanted to give him a heads up that our Somali neighbors might need a little extra love and kindness right now. #minnesota #somali #family #trump #youareloved

The kind-hearted youngster can be seen in a TikTok posted by his mom, aprilkanzenbach, who is recording the footage. At the start of the clip, an on-screen caption provides context: “I only told him that Trump said he wanted Somalians to leave.” As the video gets underway, the cheerful boy can be seen sat on a window ledge in his home, and his mom asks, “Okay, what did you just tell me? What should we do?” In response, he states, “We should, like, lock all the Somalis in our house.”

The mom replies, “So we should lock them in our house?” before the youngster explains, “Yeah, so Trump can’t get in the house and we can lock all the doors.” Clarifying things further, the mom asks, “You wanna bring all our Somali friends into here?” In a sweet and innocent way, the boy responds, “Yeah, so we can lock the doors so Trump can’t get in here.” The mom agrees with his sentiment, stating, “Oh, I would love that. That’s a great idea, honey.”

The mom jokes that “They may not want to stay with our craziness,” before the conversation shifts towards the youngster’s friend, Hashi. The young boy says, “I can just keep my, like, friend — my friend where I am.” and the mom asks which friend he’s talking about. “Hashi,” the kid replies. The mom then clarifies, “Yeah, you love Hashi. He’s your best friend, isn’t he?” and the boy agrees. “You miss Hashi? It’s been a while since you’ve seen him?” asks his mom, and the youngster answers, “Yeah.”

The kind boy looks like he gets a little shy and preoccupied with the toy torch he’s swinging in his hand, as his mom tries to teach him some Arabic words like, “assalamu alaikum“, which means “Peace be upon you.” before the footage comes to an end.

While the wholesome clip goes viral, many people were charmed by the child’s sweet message. Over on TikTok, one impressed netizen wrote, “I’m coming give me your address 😂❤️” while another added, “He is beautiful soul may God bless him [sic]”. However, not everyone was impressed, unfortunately. In fact, when Reddit users weighed in, many criticized the video. “I really hate when people use/exploit their kids as props in anything religious or political, or hell in anything in general to plaster them on social media for clicks.” wrote one disgruntled Redditor, while another chipped in with, “I never understand why people would share videos of their children on social media.”

Although the video has drawn both criticism and praise online, one thing is clear: the young boy is remarkably kind-hearted, and his welcoming message is a lesson for everyone.
