Meghan Markle’s celebratory phase post-release of her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan may be short-lived if King Charles follows through with plans to strip her of the Sussex title following continuous attacks on the royal family. On Wednesday, March 5, the Duchess of long-anticipated cooking and gardening show finally hit Netflix, quickly making it to the streamer’s top 10 most-watched list. Aside from spreading joy through her cooking, fun gathering with pals and nostalgic story-telling, Meghan appeared to direct a shot at the royal family with a seemingly subtle declaration about her surname change.
On the show’s second episode, while treating her Hollywood pals, including actress Mindy Kaling, to a sumptuous meal, Meghan Markle chipped in a tiny correction to her friend, who addressed her as “Markle,” declaring that she went by “Sussex” now. The Duchess went on to discuss the personal significance of the name in an interview, voicing how important it was to have the same name as her kids Archie and Lilibeth. She also declared the name as part of her and her husband Prince Harry’s love story, a statement many deem a jab at the royal family.
King Charles Reluctant to Strip Harry and Meghan’s Sussex Title

Following her name declaration on Netflix’s With Love, Meghan, royal commentator Phil Dampier, shared his thoughts on the royal family’s reaction and King Charles’ possible next move. Speaking to The Sun, the royal expert explained that while the monarch may feel tempted to strip Harry and Meghan Markle of their Sussex title, especially after the Duchess flaunted it on her Netflix show, he was held back by the cumbersome process involved. He noted,
“I doubt King Charles would like Meghan making references to the importance of Sussex as her name but I’ve always felt he’s reluctant to start any process of stripping her and Harry of their titles.”
Going further, the author noted that fueling his reluctance, the monarch knew how difficult it could become to strip Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of a title the late Queen Elizabeth bestowed upon them as a wedding gift nearly seven years back. Additionally, making the drastic move could further worsen the rift between Harry and the royal family, destroying any chances of reconciliation. The royal commentator added,
“The show won’t do anything to help mend the rift between them as it’s mainly just drivel about re-arranging fruit and lighting candles. At least Meghan is trying to make money out of something else besides criticizing the royal family. But any family reconciliation will take a lot longer and a real changing of attitudes on all sides.”
Royal Family in Talks to Reverse the Sussex Title If This Happens

Notably, the process of stripping the Sussexes would require an Act of Parliament, which could become lengthy and messy, attracting more unwanted drama to the royal family. Regardless, that isn’t an option the royal family is ruling out completely, as King Charles may take that path if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle continue their smear campaign against the royals. According to DailyMail, the royal family has discussed a possible course of action they could take in such a situation.
This comes as a royal insider suggested that the palace considered Meghan Markle’s conversation with Mindy Kaling about the Sussex surname on her Netflix show as a direct warning, and her way of emphasizing her connection to the Sussex title despite turning her back on the royal family years ago. The insider divulged,
“It’s clearly a warning shot.”
Experts have also noted that Meghan Markle’s comment seemed like an overly pointed remark to make to a friend in a very public situation. Hence, choosing to make the call the way she did, and letting it make the cut on her Netflix show could only mean she really wanted it to go on air as a message to the public and perhaps, the royal family.
