The Royal Family is going through a rough patch right now, but at the end of the day, King Charles says that he wants to remain a part of his grandchildren’s lives. Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have been separated from the crown for a few years now, a split that lasted through the births of Harry’s two children, Archie and Lilibet. It’s clear that the kids don’t have a close relationship with their grandfather, but after Charles’ health scare earlier this year he’s gone on record saying that he’s “committed” to being a presence in their lives – the rift between him and Prince Harry notwithstanding.
Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and his wife Meghan Markle had their first child, Prince Archie, in 2019. His birth came just months before the couple announced that they would be stepping away from their royal duties. King Charles’ second son moved his family to California in 2020, and while distance isn’t likely to be a huge problem for the Royal Family, that’s still a large gap. To make matters worse, Harry’s second child, a daughter named Lilibet – named after Charles’ late mother the Queen – was born in 2021.
King Charles is “Committed” to His Grandchildren Amid Cancer Battle
Things have been rocky between Prince Harry and the crown for years, and that didn’t change after King Charles took the throne. The rift between them has been shaken up recently, however, as Charles was officially diagnosed with cancer back in January. The king’s ongoing health crisis seems to have reminded him of his mortality, since he’s had a new drive to repair the relationship between his sons and has now stated that he’s determined to remain in his grandchildren’s lives for as long as he can. Or, as a royal insider told The Mirror:
“The King is absolutely committed to being present in all of his grandchildren’s lives. He values family above everything and whatever the course of his relationship with his son he would never be content with just seeing his grandchildren on the odd video call.”
More insiders have said that Charles reportedly sent Lilibet a birthday card last week. The Royal Family didn’t publicly acknowledge her big day, but there’s no telling how the family is operating on a personal, private level. The king is reportedly close to his grandkids from Prince William and Kate, but it’s unclear if the rift between him and his other grandchildren is due to an emotional distance or simply physical distance.
With Charles’ cancer shaking up so many of his relationships, it might be worth watching to see if his ongoing health crisis is enough to bring him closer to the youngest members of his family while he’s still got time.
