To no one’s surprise, Prince William and Prince Harry are not on the best terms to meet or communicate. The Duke of Sussex is the bad apple, after all, as he and his wayward wife, Meghan Markle, attempt to bask in the glory as royals while not being actual royals themselves. Naturally, such an affair puts Prince Harry and his father, King Charles, at odds against each other. What many might not expect is for Prince William also to have a souring relationship with Charles III.
According to a source at Us Weekly, “the dynamics have shifted” with King Charles and Prince William’s relationship along with how they want to run the monarchy. “Charles has wanted to be the monarch for decades,” and “even though he’s battling cancer, he’s not letting that get in the way of his desire to be successful on the throne or a dynamic leader.”
Nevertheless, a 76-year-old King suffering from cancer doesn’t spell good tidings for the future of the monarchy if plans aren’t made in advance. Therefore, when Charles’ cancer was revealed, Prince William “sprung into action,” doubling his efforts to ensure a smooth transition between him and his father was underway. Not to mention, “funeral plans for his father” had to be initiated as well. All this caused conflict between the father and son, resulting in a King-Charles-vs-Prince-William clash.
Prince William, 42, wishes to modernize and simplify his and his family’s way of life. For example, the big decision to move into the humble Adelaide Cottage “fits with their [William & Kate’s] desire as parents to be a normal family.” The Prince of Wales “wants the upbringing of his children to be different from his own” and wishes to do the same as a future ruler. After all, “modern times call for a modern monarchy, and William has been active in getting that together.” “William is determined” to give The Palace a “contemporary appeal” to the public.
This starkly contrasts with King Charles’s belief regarding how the crown should be worn. He strongly prefers a “traditional approach” to how things have been done in The Palace and wishes to uphold his legacy, even long after he’s gone. William, rather, is “trying to do things differently for his generation” and will likely drop many of the traditions his father has held onto so dearly for the past several years.
Queen Camilla Might Be Orchestrating the Conflict
While there are many personal and generational differences that are causing conflict between Prince William and King Charles, some commenters believe Queen Camilla is the heart of the problem regarding the father-son clash:
“I believe their problems stem from Camilla — her telling Charles that it needs to be done this way or that way. She is the one that upsets the apple cart all the time. Once William comes into power, I believe the monarchy will become more modern. Things will change to suit the times.”
Replying to the top comment, one complained that Queen Camilla “caused all the heartache in her sleazy reign to climb to the top.” While such a statement might be a bit excessive, Camilla does “love her responsibilities” as Queen. “Her whole life, she has always wanted to be queen, so she doesn’t want to let it go so fast.” Not to mention, she and Kate Middleton “have always had a tense relationship.” Unsurprisingly, she might have an issue with the Princess of Wales’ husband being put into power, doing things his own way.
That said, succession of the crown is no small matter, and with it comes a massive amount of stress for both the heir and the one being succeeded. Let’s just hope Prince William and King Charles can iron things out before cancer or age takes away the current monarch.
