In New Orleans, a woman who had been in a decade-long relationship recently made the difficult decision to walk away from her partner after he failed to acknowledge her birthday for the tenth consecutive year. According to her, she had spent all those years in the relationship without ever receiving a birthday gift or any other meaningful gesture to mark the occasion.
Hoping that this year would finally be different, she said she took the initiative to clearly tell him what she wanted, a simple birthday card from Dollar Tree. Despite setting her expectations as low as possible, the gesture never came, and her birthday passed without any acknowledgment from him.
It Became the Breaking Point
In the short clip she later shared on TikTok, the woman, who appeared very disappointed and emotionally worn down, confronted her partner about the years of neglect she said she had endured throughout their relationship. “We’ve been together 10 years,” she told him during the conversation. “My birthday is the same day every year, and you never once thought to yourself, let me put something to the side for her. I do that for you.”
Rather than acknowledging her frustration, her partner gave a vague and defensive response. “Every time I try, it’s always something that transpired,” he told her, adding that there had been times when her birthday was celebrated.
The woman strongly pushed back on his last statement, saying, “Yeah, on my dime, or somebody doing a giveaway, or somebody feeling bad for me. You never did nothing for me.” She also claimed that Valentine’s Day was another occasion that had been consistently ignored throughout their relationship.

The woman provided more context about their relationship dynamics in the caption of her post. According to her, she and her partner had lived together for many years and had split expenses evenly for much of that time. When she fell short financially, she said her partner would cover the rent while she handled food and utility bills. Despite that arrangement, she claimed the relationship became increasingly controlling.
She stated that she was often unable to leave the house freely, alleging that if she went out, she would either be threatened with being put out or physically harmed. The argument over the birthday card, she said, escalated into her partner throwing past issues in her face, leaving her emotionally drained and without the strength to continue defending herself.
“All this because I wanted a card,” she wrote. “Now I just want him to stop throwing [expletive] in my face from years ago. I don’t have strength for tit-for-tat and who did what.”
Ultimately, the woman said she left both the relationship and their shared home on her birthday. With nowhere else to go, she made her way to a shelter. “I’m used to not getting gifts,” she added. “I just want peace.”
