The Internet isn’t always a safe space for sympathy. When a video shows more than one possible story, support can split quickly and turn into a debate. That’s what a shopper in Madison, Wisconsin, experienced after posting footage of her confrontation with Kohl’s staff. She accused the employee of targeting her unfairly during checkout, but many viewers insisted the clip revealed something different.

In the video, captioned “Kohl’s Madison, Wi Racist,” the woman is seen at the register arguing with the employee. She accused the latter of following her into the fitting room earlier and questioning whether she needed all the items she carried inside. “You didn’t come up to any other customers, ma’am. And then you waited until I finished checking out to run up over here,” she said. The shopper also alleged that an “Asian woman” was positioned to block her path, suggesting she was being deliberately targeted.

Additionally, she also argued that her purchase total was $110.98, and that the exact price showing on the checkout screen in front of the employee didn’t matter because she had not applied her rewards. “I don’t care what it is, honestly. Because did I put my rewards in this one? No, ma’am. I didn’t. So it doesn’t matter how much the price is. Honestly, I’m paying it, not you.” However, the staff member, who remained calm while folding up the customer’s clothes, couldn’t even get her point across because the woman kept talking over her. “Are you going to pay for my transaction since you wanted to ring it up? I just would really like to know what was the point of this?” the shopper asked repeatedly.

Netizens React to the Madison Kohl’s Incident

Viewers noted in the comments that the register showed six items, while staff unfolded eight on the counter. This detail, they argued, may have been the reason the worker intervened. The shopper framed the encounter as racially motivated, though the video itself does not show any explicitly racist remarks or behavior from staff. Many sided with the employee, insisting the issue wasn’t racial. “This isn’t racism.. you didn’t pay for all the items PERIOD,” one comment read. Another added, “6 items on your screen. 8 items folded on the counter. Would have been better stating you were in a rush / missed those two items and paying the $140+. Instead of trying to make her the bad guy.”

Some claimed the shopper had been caught short on her payment. One commenter wrote that her total showed $110, but once the last shirt was added, it jumped to $142.99. Another bluntly said, “We didn’t get part 2 bc she found out she in the wrong [sic].” Some admitted the situation looked confusing but still leaned toward skepticism. “Maybe I’m tripping but it look [sic] like you got caught trying to steal,” one remarked, though they acknowledged her point about rewards codes “made sense.”

Commenters also pointed out that, despite the video being labeled “Part 1,” no follow-up clip has been posted, leading some to conclude the confrontation ended once the missing items were addressed. However, some were still very sympathetic towards the customer. “Oh honey, I would not even give a penny to them. After that treatment? Nope,” one netizen wrote. A second said, “I would’ve got a complete refund,” while a third suggested she should have demanded a manager immediately.
