Everyone loves a supportive community, but get a group of generous people together, and there’s bound to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing among them. That said, a story from a few years back has resurfaced on Reddit regarding a young woman in LA who made a pretty penny by pretending to be something she was not. More specifically, she pocketed around $150K from MAGA supporters by pretending to be one and gaining their sympathy and support. Little did they know, it was all a sham.

“I will not hide any longer,” the fake MAGA supporter began in her X post from October 2018. “The left has made us feel as if us black Republicans should hide!! but not anymore!!” Once her rallying cry got enough attention from Trump supporters, she fabricated a story to pull at their heartstrings and open their wallets. “After seeing this tweet my parents cut me off and refuse to pay my university tuition,” she lamented. “So if you can find it in your hearts to help this young, black republican pay for school it would be appreciated.”

It goes without saying that many people believed her story and were more than sympathetic to her cause. However, it wasn’t until her bank account was pouring over with cash that she spilled the beans to Elle. She claimed the post was initially a joke mocking another black Trump supporter who also gained a very wide following for being an outspoken MAGA fan. “I wanted to make fun of her,” she remarked. She goes on to say that the Republican party needs more “black faces” to get behind and represent their cause. As a result, “they throw money at any black person that says they support Trump so that people stop thinking of them as the ‘racist party.’ But it’s never going to happen.”

The imposter MAGA supporter’s criticism didn’t stop there. “I just wanted to remind people that Republicans are stupid and shouldn’t hold the majority anymore,” she said bluntly. “She really bamboozled tf outta y’all 😂😂😂,” read a reply to the original post on X, speaking to all those who gave money to the trickster. “F—k her. She’s scum like the rest,” remarked a Redditor. “Traitor,” another user said disdainfully. “Good for her for being part of the problem. Democracy is dead, but at least she got her bag, right?” chimed in a third.

While what this woman did was anything but right, it certainly is a solid case study of how eager some political parties are to fork out their own cash to promote their group’s reputation. Not to mention, you shouldn’t blindly hand over your money to someone on the internet based solely on their word.
