Naughty Dog has been accused of copying a cover of New Order’s True Faith without the artist’s permission in the latest The Last of Us Part IIÂ trailer.
Lotte Kestner posted on Twitter a claim that the cover in the latest The Last of Us Part II trailer was is a replica of hers. She directed her tweet to writer and director Neil Druckmann as well as Naughty Dog. Her original tweet is no longer available, but, thankfully, IGN managed to preserve it:
“@Neil_Druckmann @Naughty_Dog hey are you aware that the true faith cover you put in your last of us 2 trailer is a replica of my cover that came out 10 yrs ago? I wrote original parts not in the original song that are copied exactly by whoever covered it. I am heartbroken.” Kestner wrote in the now deleted tweet.

Lotte Kestner wrote a beautiful cover of New Order’s True Faith, which you can listen to here. Kestner’s cover, admittedly, sounds quite similar to the rendition in The Last of Us Part IIÂ trailer. Specifically, there is a humming segment of the song in both versions, a vocal part that isn’t in the original song. This segment (around 45 seconds into the trailer) is what leads Kestner to believe that her version was copied for the trailer.
Of course, what matters the most is the law; specifically, if Kestner’s claims are legitimate? Permission for use in The Last of Us Part IIÂ trailer would need to be granted by the original artist, New Order. However, permission by the artist covering the song isn’t necessarily required. It’s all complicated, as most copyright cases are.
Well, even with all the controversy regarding the latest trailer, fans anxiously await The Last of Us Part II’s release. After having been delayed due to COVID-19, the title will come out on June 19.
