A recent statement from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa could spell bad news for players hoping to get more concrete information about the much-rumored Nintendo Switch follow-up console. Information has been swirling about what the legendary video game company is planning for its next hardware release, but it seems like Nintendo is still dedicated to the Switch for the time being.
It’s no secret that the Nintendo Switch isn’t the most powerful console on the market right now. Many of the popular console’s controversies have centered around its poor performance with certain graphics-intensive titles like Doom Eternal or Mortal Kombat 1. In light of this, many gamers have been hyping themselves up for the console that Nintendo supposedly has in the late stages with plans to succeed the Switch at some point in the future, with hopes that the specs will be more accommodating for the latest games. Nintendo appears to be dedicated to the Switch for now, though.
Nintendo Switch 2 Still On The Horizon
Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa stated in an interview with Nikkei (translated by VGC) that the company is still working on Switch software that is slated for release through March 2025. This is likely to disappoint those who were hoping to see the Switch successor arriving on the market sooner rather than later.
The timeline given by Furukawa isn’t necessarily incongruent with a Switch 2 launch that could still be taking place as early as fall/winter 2024. Software was still being released on Nintendo’s last hit console, the Wii, for some time after its successor had arrived on the market. Nintendo likely plans to roll out many of the Switch 2’s first games with ports on the Switch available as well.
This could also mean, however, that Nintendo would like to spend some more time on the Switch successor while simultaneously continuing to reap the rewards of how wildly successful its current console remains even six years after its release. The Switch successor may not arrive until sometime in 2025, leaving many with nothing more than speculation and rumors for some time until official news finally comes out.
